When most people think of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), they associate it with winter—gray skies, shorter days, and colder weather. But for a lesser-known group of individuals, symptoms of depression actually worsen during summer, a condition called Reverse SAD, or Summer-pattern Seasonal Affective Disorder.
🔷 Onset in late spring or early summer
🔷 Remission in fall or winter
🔷 Pattern recurring for at least two years
🔷 Insomnia or difficulty staying asleep
🔷 Loss of appetite
🔷 Weight loss
🔷 Increased irritability or restlessness
Feelings of hopelessness or sadness
Social withdrawal, despite more daylight and events
The exact cause remains under study, but several contributing factors have been identified:
Increased sunlight may disrupt melatonin production and circadian rhythms
Longer days can lead to sleep deprivation or irregular sleep cycles
Overheating from high temperatures can worsen mood and increase irritability
Body image pressures or social expectations may heighten stress or depression
Environmental overstimulation (noise, crowds, brightness) can impact those with sensory sensitivity
Summer SAD is more likely to affect individuals who:
✅ Have a personal or family history of depression, bipolar disorder, or anxiety
✅ Are sensitive to temperature or light
✅ Experience insomnia or sleep disruption regularly
✅ Have a history of eating disorders or social anxiety
✅ Are adolescents or young adults navigating identity and body image stressors during summer months

Q: Can I have summer SAD if I’ve never had winter depression?
A: Yes. While related, they are distinct patterns. Some people only experience depressive symptoms during summer.
Q: Do teenagers experience summer-pattern SAD?
A: Absolutely. Adolescents often feel disoriented without school structure, which can amplify symptoms of depression or anxiety in the summer months.
Q: Does treatment need to be long-term?
A: Not always. Some individuals benefit from seasonal medication and short-term support during high-symptom periods.
Q: What if I don’t want to start medication?
A: That’s okay. We explore all options, including behavioral strategies, environmental changes, and therapy referrals, based on your comfort and goals.
