Begin with DBU’s counseling sign-up route
DBU directs students to its official counseling sign-up form or the Counseling Center office in the Collins Learning Center. After submission, staff contact the student about scheduling. The contact page notes that a waitlist is possible.
Give realistic times when you can attend and watch for the center’s reply. If your availability changes, tell the office. When making the initial request, keep the administrative question simple: you want to start counseling and understand the next step. Ask staff which approved channel to use for detailed health information.

Ask what the outside referral is for
Ask the counselor to name the purpose of the referral before you call another office. Write it down in your own words and check that you have understood. Is the next step an assessment, ongoing therapy or a service that requires a different setting?
A referral for a medication evaluation is a request for an assessment, not a decision that you must take medication. Tell the receiving clinician your goals and concerns, and ask how the visit will work. If you already have a prescriber, identify what you need now: advice, records transfer, an ongoing appointment or a change in where you receive care.
- What service should I request when I call the outside office?
- Is this a transfer of care or a request for an additional evaluation?
- What information should the receiving clinician have before the visit?

Confirm whether campus counseling will continue
DBU’s published scope includes a limitation concerning clients already receiving treatment from another mental-health professional. Do not assume campus counseling and outside care can simply run in parallel. Ask DBU how that policy applies to the particular arrangement you are considering.
Make the answer concrete. Which clinician would provide therapy? Which would manage medication if it is prescribed? What authorization would they need to communicate? Who would you contact between visits? Clear answers are more useful than a general instruction to “coordinate care.”

Check an outside provider before booking
DBU publishes a counseling-agency list for information and expressly says that it does not endorse or establish the quality of the listed services. Use a listing as a lead to investigate, not as proof of insurance coverage, availability or a university partnership.
When you call a practice, state the service you were advised to seek. Ask whether it treats students with that need and whether the visit can occur in person or by video. Confirm the individual clinician, your exact insurance plan, the estimated charge and the cancellation policy. If the answer does not fit your budget or schedule, ask DBU for help identifying another option.
Arrange records through the center’s release process
DBU’s contact page provides a records-request process and says staff will verify the request and coordinate any needed authorization. Ask for the current instructions before sending material to an outside practice.
Keep a private note of the receiving practice’s name, which records were requested and whether the receiving office has confirmed arrival. Bring your own questions and a medication list to the appointment. An incomplete file is a reason to ask the two offices for help, rather than guess what information was transferred.

Use urgent support when needed
DBU lists 988 among its crisis resources and directs emergencies to 911. For an on-campus emergency, its University Police number is 214-333-5555. Do not rely on a routine intake form or email when immediate help is needed.
Considering therapy or medication management at Lyte
Lyte provides therapy, psychiatric evaluation and medication management. Ask which service and clinician fit your needs. A medication evaluation does not guarantee a prescription or continuation of a particular medication.
Lyte Psychiatry offers telehealth visits to patients who are physically located in Texas at the time of the visit. In-person appointments take place at Lyte’s Pantego clinic; this campus guide does not describe a Lyte office at the institution.
Coverage and costs depend on your specific plan, clinician, visit type and deductible. Confirm network status and expected costs before booking. A student plan, parent’s plan or campus referral does not by itself establish Lyte coverage.
Request a Lyte appointmentConfirm appointment format, availability and costs before booking. For questions, call 469-733-0848. Clinic hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM Central Time. Weekend appointments are limited and offered case by case.
Send medical records and insurance details only through the practice’s approved secure intake process.
Questions before you arrange care
Does DBU’s Counseling Center provide medication evaluations?
DBU lists medication evaluation as an outside-referral need. Ask for the current route.
Sources: DBU Counseling Center: Scope of Care
Does a DBU referral mean Lyte is affiliated with the university?
No. Lyte is independent. Do not infer a partnership, campus office, special rate or student-plan acceptance from this guide.
What should I do if I cannot arrange the referred appointment?
Tell the referring team which obstacle you encountered, such as cost, scheduling or the service offered. Ask what alternative step is appropriate and what contact you should use while sorting it out.
