Psychiatry & therapy for Texas Tech students
Lubbock is five hours from almost everywhere, and that distance is part of the Red Raider mental health story. Students here are farther from their home support systems than almost any other big campus in Texas, and the West Texas provider shortage means the off-campus referral list is short. Winter wind and a long flat horizon do the rest.
When campus counseling runs out of sessions
The Student Counseling Center serves the whole campus and, like every center its size, has finite capacity. We function as the off-campus option that does not require a car, a waitlist, or explaining Lubbock geography to anyone: psychiatric evaluations and therapy by video, with evening slots after labs.
Campus resource: Texas Tech Student Counseling Center. If you are in crisis right now, call or text 988 any time.
Insurance, for students and the parents reading this
Most Tech students ride parents' plans from DFW, Houston, or the Metroplex suburbs. BlueCross, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Aetna, all in-network. Self-pay rates are posted for students between coverage.
How visits actually work at Texas Tech
Care continues when you scatter for summer, whether home is Frisco or Fort Stockton, because the telehealth license covers the whole state. Prescriptions transfer to your hometown pharmacy in one message.
Wondering about ADHD medication rules for students? Read exactly how we handle stimulants and evaluations. Not sure what you are dealing with yet? Take the free 2-minute depression screen or anxiety screen, the same instruments we score at every visit. You can also read about mental health care in Lubbock or our broader college student care.
By video, wherever you are between classes
Most new patients are seen within 1 to 2 business days. Most insured students pay a $0 to $30 copay. Care continues through breaks and past graduation.
