Begin even if you are unsure what kind of help to request
UTPB’s counseling FAQ says students can speak with a counselor without first deciding whether their concern is suitable for counseling. The mental-health page provides an online request link, and the FAQ describes contacting the center to discuss the concern and arrange an appointment.
Prepare a short description of what is getting in the way of your studies or daily life and what you hope will change. Ask which appointment you are requesting and how the office confirms it. You do not need to select a diagnosis to make an administrative inquiry.
Identify the exact TimelyCare service
UTPB lists TimelyCare options that include on-demand emotional support, scheduled counseling and psychiatric care. These are different services within the virtual program; access to the platform is not a confirmed psychiatry appointment.
Follow the university’s program link and check which service is available to you. For medication care questions, ask about the assessment and any referral steps. If you will be away from Odessa, give the program your physical location and confirm whether the appointment can take place there. Save the service name and next action rather than only the app login.

Distinguish the Medical Services Plan from health insurance
UTPB’s health-services directory lists its Medical Services Plan and optional student health insurance separately. Its medical page identifies Trinity Family Medicine as the primary-care service and describes fee, enrollment and location conditions.
Ask UTPB to confirm your eligibility if you study online, take dual-credit classes or live away from Odessa. Before visiting the clinic, verify the identification to bring, which service the plan covers and any extra charge. Do not assume that a student fee pays for an independent therapist, a psychiatric appointment elsewhere or every service at the clinic.

Turn a community referral into a specific intake task
The Mental Health Center describes community referrals for needs outside its scope or availability. Its resource page also identifies PermiaCare as the local mental health authority serving Ector, Midland and other listed counties.
When receiving a referral, ask why that organization fits and what you should request when calling. Verify the relevant county, program eligibility and intake process with the organization itself. If the connection fails, report the exact obstacle to the referring team so it can help you consider another route.

Agree on goals and review the plan as your needs change
UTPB describes counseling as a collaboration about priorities and approach; its FAQ says the duration varies by the individual. Avoid treating a typical session count as a promise about your own care.
At a follow-up, ask what progress you are working toward, when the plan will be reviewed and whether another service needs to be involved. Before an internship, move or graduation, identify any unfinished referral and the person responsible for the next step. If records are needed, ask the counseling office how to authorize the relevant information.

Considering therapy or medication management at Lyte
Lyte provides therapy, psychiatric evaluation and medication management. Ask which service and clinician fit your needs. A medication evaluation does not guarantee a prescription or continuation of a particular medication.
Lyte Psychiatry offers telehealth visits to patients who are physically located in Texas at the time of the visit. In-person appointments take place at Lyte’s Pantego clinic; this campus guide does not describe a Lyte office at the institution.
Coverage and costs depend on your specific plan, clinician, visit type and deductible. Confirm network status and expected costs before booking. A student plan, parent’s plan or campus referral does not by itself establish Lyte coverage.
Request a Lyte appointmentConfirm appointment format, availability and costs before booking. For questions, call 469-733-0848. Clinic hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM Central Time. Weekend appointments are limited and offered case by case.
Send medical records and insurance details only through the practice’s approved secure intake process.
Questions before you arrange care
Does UTPB’s Medical Services Plan cover any therapist I choose?
The university describes a specific primary-care arrangement and lists student health insurance separately. Ask about outside therapy coverage through your insurance or the receiving practice; do not infer it from the campus medical fee.

Do I need to know whether counseling is right for me before contacting UTPB?
No. The counseling FAQ invites students to ask a counselor about fit. Start with the concern and the support you are seeking; the consultation can help clarify the next step.
