Psychotherapy or talk therapy can help a person function better and can also increase healing and well being. It is a tried and tested method for treating a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy involves speaking with a licensed mental health and wellness expert about bothering emotions or thoughts. It also involves the use of medication when it is needed. The objective of psychotherapy is to help the client find how to handle certain problems, and create healthy and balanced coping skills.
In psychotherapy, psychiatrist and other mental health professionals use several types of therapy. The choice of therapy type depends on the client’s particular illness and circumstances and his/her preference. Therapists may combine elements from different approaches to best meet the needs of the person receiving treatment.
Interpersonal therapy (IPT) is a short-term form of treatment that concentrates on a client’s interactions with friends and family. The goal of this social treatment is to improve interactions, partnerships and also raise self-confidence. It can be effective for those experiencing depression or social isolation. It allows an individual to learn healthy ways of expressing emotions and shows ways to improve communication and relationships with others.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) entails finding out brand-new methods to think differently about situations. It replaces harmful thoughts and behaviors with accurate thoughts and functional behaviors. It also helps a person prioritize current problems and how to solve them. CBT is practical and has been known to help treat a variety of disorders, including depression, anxiety, trauma related disorders, and eating disorders.
Dialectical behavior therapy is a type of CBT that helps in regulation of emotions. It involves both individual and group therapy and can be used to treat people with chronic suicidal thoughts and those with borderline personality disorder, eating disorders and PTSD. It encourages the use of new skills to help people take personal responsibility to change unhealthy or disruptive behavior.
Psychodynamic therapy is based on the school of thought stating that behavior and mental well-being are influenced by childhood experiences and inappropriate repetitive thoughts or feelings that are outside of the person’s awareness. To become more self aware and change old patterns, a person can work with the therapist and can fully take charge of his/her life.Psychoanalysis is a more intense form of psychodynamic therapy.
Supportive therapy helps guide and encourage clients to develop their own resources. It is supportive and helps build self-esteem, reduce anxiety, strengthen coping mechanisms, and improve social and community functioning. Clients become more capable of dealing with issues related to their mental health conditions which in turn affect the rest of their lives.
