Wellbutrin vs Zoloft: How They Compare for Depression
Wellbutrin (bupropion) and Zoloft (sertraline) are both commonly prescribed for depression, but they work through completely different mechanisms β and have very different side effect profiles. The right choice often comes down to whether anxiety or low energy is your primary concern.

Wellbutrin (bupropion)
NDRI β norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor
Wellbutrin is the only major antidepressant that primarily acts on dopamine and norepinephrine β not serotonin. This makes it uniquely activating, with minimal sexual side effects and weight-neutral or weight-loss effects. FDA-approved for MDD and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and widely used off-label for ADHD.
Best for
- Depression with prominent fatigue, hypersomnia, or low motivation
- Patients who experienced sexual side effects on SSRIs
- Smoking cessation (FDA-approved as Zyban)
- ADHD in adults who cannot take stimulants
- Patients concerned about weight gain
Not ideal if
- Patients with seizure history or risk factors β lowers seizure threshold
- Those with prominent anxiety β can worsen anxiety
- Eating disorders (anorexia/bulimia) β contraindicated
- Patients needing a sleep aid (Wellbutrin is activating)
Zoloft (sertraline)
SSRI β sertraline hydrochloride
Zoloft is one of the most prescribed antidepressants in the US and has the broadest FDA-approved indications of any SSRI: MDD, OCD, panic disorder, PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and PMDD. Generally well-tolerated with a balanced side effect profile.
Best for
- Depression with co-occurring anxiety β FDA-approved for both
- PTSD β FDA-approved, first-line treatment
- Panic disorder and social anxiety
- PMDD β FDA-approved
- Patients who need a well-studied, versatile antidepressant
Not ideal if
- Patients prioritizing no sexual side effects
- Those needing activating/energizing effects
- Patients concerned about GI side effects β sertraline has higher GI incidence than other SSRIs
Our Clinical Verdict
Wellbutrin for depression with fatigue and no anxiety; Zoloft for depression with anxiety, PTSD, or OCD.
Wellbutrin and Zoloft are frequently prescribed together β Wellbutrin augments Zoloft's antidepressant effect and counteracts the sexual side effects. If you've tried one and had a partial response, adding the other is a common evidence-based strategy. A Lyte Psychiatry evaluation determines your exact symptom profile and history to select the right starting point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Wellbutrin or Zoloft cause weight gain?
Wellbutrin is generally weight-neutral to weight-reducing. Zoloft can cause modest weight gain (1β2 lbs on average) in long-term use, though less than paroxetine or mirtazapine. If weight change is a concern, it's an important factor your psychiatrist will discuss at your evaluation.
Which is better for anxiety β Wellbutrin or Zoloft?
Zoloft is significantly better for anxiety. Wellbutrin can worsen anxiety and is not recommended for patients with prominent anxious depression. Zoloft is FDA-approved for generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and panic disorder.
Can Wellbutrin and Zoloft be taken together?
Yes β this combination is commonly used. Wellbutrin augments Zoloft's antidepressant effect and counteracts sexual side effects. There is a mild interaction (Wellbutrin inhibits CYP2D6, raising Zoloft levels slightly), which your prescriber manages through dose selection.

Both generic bupropion and generic sertraline are covered by all major Texas insurance plans at very low copays β typically $0β$10. Lyte Psychiatry accepts Ambetter, BCBS, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Humana, and Magellan.
