What is the difference between depression and normal sadness?
Normal sadness is a temporary emotional response to specific life events and typically resolves within days. Clinical depression persists for two weeks or more, is not necessarily tied to a clear cause, and significantly impairs daily functioning including sleep, appetite, concentration, and relationships. The APA's DSM-5 criteria require at least 5 of 9 specific symptoms for at least two weeks to diagnose major depressive disorder.
What are warning signs that someone needs immediate help for depression?
Seek urgent evaluation for: thoughts of suicide or self-harm, inability to perform basic daily functions, severe hopelessness, significant unexpected weight loss, or psychotic symptoms. Can depression co-occur with anxiety or ADHD?
