What Psychiatric Medication Management Includes

Our medication management visits include a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation at the start to establish or confirm the diagnosis, a discussion of treatment options and the evidence behind them, prescription of appropriate medication, follow-up visits to assess response and manage side effects, dose adjustments, and coordination with therapists or other providers when needed. We explain everything in plain language and answer every question.

Antidepressants

Antidepressants are among the most prescribed medications in the United States, according to NIMH. SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and SNRIs (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) are first-line treatments for depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and panic disorder. They are not habit-forming. Most take 2 to 4 weeks to produce noticeable improvement, with full therapeutic effect at 6 to 8 weeks.

Mood Stabilizers

Mood stabilizers including lithium, valproate, and lamotrigine are the foundation of bipolar disorder treatment. Lithium has the most evidence behind it and has been shown to reduce suicide risk in bipolar disorder. Patients on lithium need periodic blood level monitoring, which Lyte Psychiatry coordinates with local labs. We tailor mood stabilizer selection to each patient's specific bipolar type, episode history, and medical considerations.

ADHD Medications

Stimulant medications including methylphenidate and amphetamine salts are the most effective ADHD treatments available, working in about 70 to 80% of patients, according to NIMH. Non-stimulant options are available for patients who cannot tolerate stimulants or have a history of substance use. Texas law requires an in-person evaluation before a stimulant can be prescribed for a new patient. Follow-up appointments may be via telehealth.

What We Do Not Prescribe

Lyte Psychiatry does not prescribe medications for purposes outside evidence-based psychiatric indications. We do not prescribe benzodiazepines as first-line or long-term treatments for anxiety (due to dependence risk). We prescribe conservatively and always prioritize patient safety. If a medication you have been taking previously is not appropriate to continue, we will explain why and discuss alternatives.

What psychiatric medications does Lyte Psychiatry prescribe?

We prescribe SSRIs, SNRIs, mood stabilizers (lithium, valproate, lamotrigine), atypical antipsychotics, stimulant and non-stimulant ADHD medications, prazosin, buspirone, and other evidence-based psychiatric medications. We follow APA clinical practice guidelines for all prescribing decisions.

Can psychiatric medications be prescribed via telehealth in Texas?

Most psychiatric medications can be prescribed via telehealth, including antidepressants, mood stabilizers, non-stimulant ADHD medications, and antipsychotics. Controlled substances (stimulant ADHD medications, benzodiazepines) require an in-person evaluation for new patients under Texas law.

How often do medication management appointments need to happen?

Initially, we typically schedule a follow-up within 2 to 4 weeks of starting a new medication to assess response and side effects. Once stabilized, most patients are seen every 1 to 3 months depending on their condition and the medications prescribed.

What happens if a medication stops working?

It is not unusual for a medication's effectiveness to change over time. We review what changed, whether the dose is adequate, whether something in your life has shifted, and whether a different medication or adjunctive treatment would serve you better. NIMH notes that most people with mood disorders require medication adjustments over the course of their treatment.

Are psychiatric medications addictive?

Most psychiatric medications are not habit-forming. Antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics do not cause physical dependence or addiction. Stimulant ADHD medications are Schedule II controlled substances with abuse potential if misused but do not cause addiction when taken as prescribed. Benzodiazepines carry real dependence risk with long-term use, which is why Lyte Psychiatry does not use them as first-line or long-term treatments.
