Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Texas
Oppositional defiant disorder is a persistent pattern of angry or irritable mood, argumentative and defiant behaviour, and vindictiveness lasting at least six months and beyond what is typical for a child's age. Parent-mediated treatment is first-line.

Understanding oppositional defiant disorder
The diagnosis requires a pattern well beyond ordinary developmental testing of limits: at least six months, present across situations or with more than one person, and causing real problems at home, at school, or with peers.
What causes defiance matters more than the label. Undiagnosed ADHD, learning difficulties, anxiety, trauma, autism, and depression all produce oppositional behaviour, and treating the underlying cause frequently resolves most of it.
The best-evidenced treatments are parent-mediated: parent management training and similar programmes. That is not a judgement about parenting; it reflects that changing the interaction pattern around the child is what reliably changes the behaviour.
Symptoms and when to seek an evaluation
- Frequent loss of temper and easy annoyance
- Arguing with adults and refusing to follow rules
- Deliberately annoying others
- Blaming others for their own mistakes
- Spite or vindictiveness
- Problems at school, at home, or with peers as a result

What your first visit involves
- Behaviour pattern, duration, and the settings in which it occurs
- Screening for ADHD, learning difficulties, anxiety, trauma, autism, and depression
- Family context, including consistency of expectations and current stressors
- School information where available and where parents consent
First appointments run longer than follow-ups so there is time to take a full history. You leave with a working diagnosis, a plan, and a follow-up date rather than a prescription and no explanation.
Therapy, psychiatry, and combined care
- Referral into parent management training, the strongest-evidenced treatment
- Treating co-occurring ADHD, anxiety, or depression, which often reduces defiance substantially
- Individual therapy for the young person where developmentally appropriate
- School coordination with parental consent
- Medication only for co-occurring conditions, not for ODD itself
Therapy and psychiatry are delivered in-house by clinicians licensed in Texas and share one chart, so a prescriber and a therapist working with you are looking at the same notes. Many people do best with both.

Frequently asked questions
Is ODD just bad behaviour or bad parenting?
Neither. It is a recognised diagnosis with a defined pattern, duration, and impairment threshold. Parent-mediated treatment is first-line because changing the interaction pattern works, not because parents caused it.
What is usually behind the defiance?
Very often ADHD, and also anxiety, learning difficulties, trauma, autism, or depression. Assessing for those comes first, because treating them frequently resolves most of the oppositional behaviour.
Is there medication for ODD?
No medication treats ODD itself. Medication is used for co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, and doing so often reduces conflict substantially.
Does Lyte provide parent training?
Not in-house. We assess, treat co-occurring conditions, and refer to parent management training programmes, which have the strongest evidence for ODD.
