Identify the adjustment and the event
Check that the notice concerns an income-related monthly adjustment amount, or IRMAA. SSA’s client instructions describe requesting a reduction when a life-changing event lowers household income. If the issue is an amended tax return, those instructions direct you to contact Social Security through a separate route.
SSA calls the life-event review a new initial determination. Its current policy distinguishes that request from an appeal of the existing determination. If you also disagree with the original decision, ask SSA which process and deadline apply; do not assume submitting SSA-44 handles every dispute.

Match the evidence to the actual change
SSA-44 lists events including work reduction or stoppage, marriage, divorce, a spouse’s death and specified losses of pension or property income. Read the listed categories and evidence instructions before choosing one. SSA determines whether the circumstances qualify.
For a work reduction or stoppage, the form describes evidence such as an employer statement or pay stubs and an applicant-statement alternative when evidence is unavailable. Use the instructions for your actual event. Keep the event date and supporting document together so SSA can identify what changed.

Prepare the requested income years
The form asks for a more recent tax year, adjusted gross income, tax-exempt interest and filing status. It also provides a step for a lower expected income in the following year. Label estimates as estimates and follow the current form’s year instructions.
Provide the requested tax evidence, such as a signed return or transcript. Follow the form’s instructions for presenting original or certified event documents. If the estimate changes or you later file the return supporting it, update SSA as instructed. This organizer does not calculate tax income or a new premium.

Choose the submission route and track the response
SSA’s current client page links an online SSA-44 submission after sign-in. It also allows the completed form and evidence to be faxed or mailed to your Social Security office and offers an appointment route. Use that official page to select the method and confirm the receiving office.
Save the request, supporting-item list and submission confirmation privately. Track any request for more information and the resulting notice. If a spouse’s adjustment is also affected, SSA says each affected beneficiary must contact it; one person’s request is not automatically extended to the other.

Common questions
Does SSA-44 replace a Medicare claim appeal?
No. SSA-44 addresses a qualifying life event affecting an income-related premium adjustment. A decision about payment for a service follows the claim’s appeal instructions. Ask SSA about a disagreement with the IRMAA determination itself.
Will my spouse’s adjustment change when I submit my request?
SSA says a new initial determination applies to the requesting beneficiary. An affected spouse or ex-spouse must contact SSA separately; keep each notice and request identifiable.
