Choose the route for the event
Southern Smoke distinguishes individual-crisis applications from its large-scale-crisis route. It also describes employment and crisis criteria. Read the current instructions before opening a form, and ask the program which route applies if your circumstances span both.
Name the event and the expense you want reviewed. For a Texas mental-health-related expense, ask whether the request belongs with Behind You or emergency relief. The relief page discusses different mental-health funding circumstances; do not assume an ordinary recurring counseling bill qualifies for a grant.

Write a short need statement
The relief process asks for an explanation of the need, work verification and supporting crisis or expense documents. Prepare a timeline with the event date, what changed financially and the specific expense you are asking the program to consider.
Separate amounts already paid from outstanding balances and estimated future charges. Connect each amount to a document where possible. If you do not yet have a final bill, label the figure as an estimate and ask whether the program needs something different. Avoid turning a financial explanation into an unnecessary clinical history.

Match each file to the point it supports
Southern Smoke’s document examples show the importance of readable names, pay periods, dates and billed amounts. Use the examples to understand what makes evidence usable, then follow the documents actually requested for your case.
Create a small index for yourself: filename, what it establishes and any missing detail. For example, a paystub can establish a work period while a bill identifies an expense. Ask the case manager before sending additional medical material merely because a similar document appears in the examples. Keep your original records unchanged.
Give case-management questions a clear response
The published process describes case-manager review and preparation of requests for a funding decision. Keep the contact’s instructions with your submitted material. When more information is requested, note the exact item, where it should go and how to confirm receipt.
Before relying on assistance, obtain the actual decision and ask how any approved help would be applied. Discuss an unresolved bill with its issuing office separately. A pending grant request does not tell the provider that payment has been arranged, and a provider’s willingness to discuss a bill does not establish a grant award.

Your next-step checklist
- Identify the individual or large-scale-crisis route.
- Write the event date, financial effect and requested expense.
- Separate paid bills, unpaid balances and estimates.
- Match work and expense files to the request.
- Record case-manager questions and wait for the funding decision.
Keep personal, insurance and medical information in the appropriate organization’s approved secure channel.
Common questions
Should I upload every medical document in the examples?
No. Use the examples to understand document clarity, then ask which records are needed for your request. A sample packet does not mean every applicant must send the same medical information.
Does applying for Behind You also request a relief grant?
Treat the counseling and emergency-relief processes as separate. Start from the relief page for a hardship-funding question and ask which expense category and application route apply.
