Confirm the program before following a survivor checklist
TRICARE’s survivor guidance branches by the sponsor’s military status and the family member’s relationship. If you are unsure of the sponsor’s status, it directs you to a casualty assistance officer or service personnel office.
Gather the plan information and the DEERS letter before asking about enrollment. This guide concerns the documented Reserve Select situation; a retiree’s, active-duty member’s or other survivor program may have a different route.

Separate an automatic change from a required purchase
For a family already covered by Reserve Select, TRICARE says coverage changes to survivor coverage and DEERS sends a letter. If only the sponsor had Reserve Select, the family has a time-limited opportunity to purchase survivor coverage under the stated conditions.
Ask the contractor to confirm which branch applies before submitting another enrollment. Keep the letter and the answer together. Do not assume a relative must file a new purchase request when an existing family enrollment is already changing automatically.
Act on the survivor-specific dates
For a family purchase after sponsor-only Reserve Select enrollment, TRICARE says the application must be received or postmarked within 90 days after the sponsor’s death. Its current survivor page also explains that available duration differs by whether the sponsor died before or on or after October 1, 2025.
Ask the contractor to confirm the deadline, form, premium arrangements and coverage dates for the actual case. Record the requested action and who will complete it. Use the survivor instructions rather than the ordinary deactivation or TAMP timeline.

Follow up on separate records and appointment details
TRICARE says DMDC receives death information from the services and Social Security, while families may also provide notification directly. Its survivor page identifies separate notification to Express Scripts.
Keep a small list of which organization has confirmed its update. Once the health-plan result is known, ask the practice to verify any planned appointment under the current plan and dates. A DEERS update does not by itself answer every pharmacy, billing or clinical scheduling question.

Your next-step checklist
- Confirm the sponsor’s program and status.
- Find the DEERS letter and whether family coverage already existed.
- Ask whether coverage converts or a purchase request is required.
- Track the survivor-specific deadline and confirmed dates.
- Follow the separate notification instructions and recheck scheduled care.
Keep personal, insurance and medical information in the appropriate organization’s approved secure channel.
Common questions
Must every surviving family submit a new Reserve Select application?
No. TRICARE distinguishes existing family coverage, which changes to survivor coverage, from sponsor-only enrollment, where the family must follow the purchase opportunity. Confirm the correct branch.
Does every family have to report the death to DEERS itself?
TRICARE says DMDC receives information from the services and Social Security, while offering optional direct-notification routes. Its instructions separately address Express Scripts notification.
