Why isn't my antidepressant working anymore?
Reviewed by Dr. Akinwande Akintola, MD - Sun Jul 19 2026
It happens. A medication that carried you for years fades. Clinicians call it tachyphylaxis; patients call it "poop-out." Both are real. The fixes: adjust the dose, add a second medication, switch agents, or bring in therapy.
But first, look for what changed: new stress, worse sleep, more alcohol, a thyroid problem, or a bipolar pattern that was never caught. Half the time "my medication stopped working" is actually "my life changed and my treatment didn't." Either way, don't white-knuckle it. A medication review finds the reason.
