A first psychiatric appointment for a teenager is an evaluation, not a promise of a prescription. The clinician assesses symptoms, daily functioning, health history and treatment options before recommending next steps.

Ask how the teenager and parent or guardian will participate, what confidentiality limits apply, and how benefits and side effects would be monitored if medication is recommended. Bring current medicines, prior treatment records and the teenager’s own questions. Ask about therapy and other options as well.
