Illness Anxiety Disorder Treatment in Texas
Illness anxiety disorder is preoccupation with having or developing a serious illness, with high health anxiety and either excessive checking or avoidance of medical care. Physical symptoms are mild or absent. Reassurance helps for hours, then stops working.

Understanding illness anxiety disorder
The mechanism is the reassurance loop. A negative test relieves anxiety briefly, the relief teaches you that checking is what keeps you safe, and the next symptom restarts the cycle. That is why more tests reliably fail to solve the problem.
Two behavioural patterns exist, and they look opposite. Care-seekers check, scan their bodies, search symptoms online, and repeatedly consult doctors. Care-avoiders are so frightened of a diagnosis that they skip appointments entirely, sometimes for years.
Taking the fear seriously is a prerequisite for treatment. Being told 'there is nothing wrong with you' is what most patients have already heard many times, and it is why they arrive expecting to be dismissed rather than treated.
Symptoms and when to seek an evaluation
- Persistent preoccupation with having a serious illness
- High anxiety about health that reassurance does not settle
- Repeatedly checking your body for signs of disease
- Searching symptoms online for hours
- Seeking repeated tests, or avoiding doctors entirely out of fear
- Mild or absent physical symptoms interpreted catastrophically
Seek an evaluation when these symptoms have lasted for weeks, are getting worse, or are affecting your work, sleep, or relationships. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 now.
What your first visit involves
- Distinguishing illness anxiety from somatic symptom disorder, where symptoms are prominent
- Confirming appropriate medical evaluation has occurred without recommending more of it
- Mapping checking, searching, and reassurance behaviours
- Screening for panic disorder, OCD, and depression
First appointments run longer than follow-ups so there is time to take a full history. You leave with a working diagnosis, a plan, and a follow-up date rather than a prescription and no explanation.
Therapy, psychiatry, and combined care
- CBT for health anxiety, including planned reduction of checking and searching
- Exposure to uncertainty rather than pursuit of further certainty
- SSRI medication for moderate to severe symptoms
- A coordinated plan with your primary care provider about test frequency
- Attention-refocusing work on body scanning and symptom monitoring
Therapy and psychiatry are delivered in-house by clinicians licensed in Texas and share one chart, so a prescriber and a therapist working with you are looking at the same notes. Many people do best with both.

Frequently asked questions
Are you saying the symptoms are in my head?
No. The anxiety is real, the physical sensations are real, and the distress is real. What treatment targets is the cycle of checking and reassurance that keeps the fear alive, not whether you are imagining anything.
Why doesn't a clear test result help for long?
Because relief from reassurance is temporary and teaches your brain that checking is what keeps you safe. The next sensation restarts the cycle, which is why the number of tests keeps rising without the fear ever settling.
What if I actually do have something serious?
New or changing physical symptoms should always be evaluated medically. Treatment does not ask you to ignore your body; it addresses the checking and catastrophic interpretation that continue after appropriate evaluation.
Does Lyte order tests?
No. We do not order imaging or labs. We work with your primary care provider on a sensible plan for medical review while treating the anxiety itself.
