Describe what happened to your earlier coverage
TRS identifies people who were eligible but did not enroll, people who later ended coverage, and certain surviving spouses or dependents among the groups addressed by this opportunity. Ask TRS whether your circumstances qualify; this list does not establish your eligibility.
Write a short history using the records you already have: when you retired, whether you enrolled in TRS-Care, and whether that coverage later ended. Label dates you cannot verify. A useful first question is, “Which enrollment category should I ask about based on this history?” Keep the response with the documents it refers to.
Separate ready information from missing information
The official preparation list includes Medicare Part B confirmation, your Medicare Beneficiary Identifier and an enrollment application. TRS offers the application through MyTRS or as a physical copy requested from TRS Health.
Make a checklist with three columns: available, needs clarification and requested from another organization. Keep the checklist separate from the sensitive documents themselves. If your name or other identifying information differs across older correspondence, ask TRS how to resolve that before assuming an old record is ready for a new application.
Use the application for the current opportunity
Open the dated TRS page when you are ready to proceed and confirm that the opportunity is still available. Ask TRS which current instructions apply to you, including any household members you want to discuss. Record the response instead of relying on a form retained from an earlier retirement decision.
Save the application submission record and any request for additional information. Add one follow-up entry for each unresolved item, showing who needs to act and how you will check completion. If you only requested a form, label that step “form requested” so it does not get mistaken for a submitted application.
Close the enrollment task with a specific response
Ask TRS where to find the enrollment decision and confirmed effective date. Keep those questions distinct from requests for plan materials or a replacement form. If you have other coverage, take any coordination question to the responsible administrators before making changes based on an anticipated approval.
For ongoing mental health appointments, prepare a separate question for the practice: what information does it need to check the intended coverage for the named clinician and visit? Provide the confirmed details through its designated channel. When a date is pending, mark it pending and ask how the office handles that situation.
Your next-step checklist
- Check the opportunity dates on the official TRS page.
- Write down whether you declined or later ended coverage.
- Ask TRS which application route fits that history.
- Track submission and requests for missing information.
- Confirm the coverage response before updating appointment billing.
Keep personal, insurance and medical information in the appropriate organization’s approved secure channel.
Common questions
Is this the same as the enrollment opportunity when I turn 65?
This page concerns the dated limited enrollment opportunity. Give TRS your age, prior coverage history and current circumstances so it can identify the applicable route.
Does requesting an application mean I have rejoined?
Keep those as separate steps in your notes. Ask TRS for the enrollment response and effective date, then bring the confirmed information to the practice for its appointment check.
