Track the notification and evidence deadlines separately
Rule 7 generally requires written notice before the absence day. When advance notice is impossible, notify the instructor by the end of the second business day after the absence ends and explain the delay. Unless the rule specifies otherwise, documentation is due within three business days after the final absence date.
Make one row for each affected course with the instructor, missed dates, notice sent and evidence delivered. Include an exam or assignment deadline that needs an answer. Send the notice through the instructor’s stated channel and retain a copy. If you are unsure how a deadline applies, ask promptly instead of waiting until every document is available.

Ask the treating office about the appropriate note
The rule describes a note from a provider involved in your care, showing the assessment date and time and the date you may return to class. It does not require detailed medical information. UHS says it can confirm a medically necessary visit under this rule; faculty use that document in considering the absence.
Give your treating office the actual documentation instruction and the dates in question. Ask what it can appropriately provide and how to obtain it. Check the document for an obvious date or recipient error before submitting it. Keep the office’s answer separate from the instructor’s decision. A request for documentation should not be treated as confirmation that a particular letter will be issued.

Use Student Life’s notification route if you cannot communicate
Student Life links a Student Absence Notification for emergencies that prevent students from contacting professors. Someone else may request it when the student is physically unable to submit it. The notification neither excuses the absence nor requests an excuse. Student Life also encourages hospitalized students to discuss returning to class with Student Assistance Services.
Open the form from the official FAQ page so you reach the university’s current route. If someone helps you, agree on who will track the response and avoid assuming the notice settles the coursework question. Once you can communicate, ask each instructor what remains outstanding and whether additional documentation is needed. Keep any return-to-class support discussion on your task list.
Get an answer about missed work and ongoing access needs
Rule 7 provides make-up work or an alternative for an excused absence. It separately directs disability-related attendance questions to Disability Resources.
Ask the instructor to identify the assignment or exam arrangement and its agreed date. Put that answer alongside the absence decision. If the situation will affect attendance repeatedly, ask Disability Resources which process applies before assuming one absence document covers future dates. If an answer is unclear, identify the specific unresolved item: the evidence, the excuse decision, the missed work or an ongoing accommodation request.

Your next-step checklist
- List each course, missed date and approaching assessment.
- Save written notice and the explanation for any unavoidable delay.
- Record when the requested evidence was sent.
- Keep any Student Life notification response with the course correspondence.
- Confirm the academic decision and unfinished work with each instructor.
Keep personal, insurance and medical information in the appropriate organization’s approved secure channel.
Common questions
Does a routine medical appointment automatically qualify as excused?
Rule 7 excludes non-acute medical services from its illness provision. It has a separate documented VA-appointment exception for student veterans. Ask the instructor how the rule applies to your request rather than assuming every appointment qualifies.

What if I have a notification confirmation but no answer about an exam?
Contact the instructor with the affected exam and dates. Ask what decision or documentation is still needed, then save the response. The communication record helps you identify the next step; it does not establish the outcome.
