Ask TRS which enrollment event applies
TRS describes TRS-Care Standard for retirees under 65 who are not Medicare-eligible. Its enrollment instructions distinguish service retirement from disability retirement. Ask TRS to identify your applicable process and deadline; age alone does not establish eligibility.
Prepare a short opening message: “I am arranging retiree health coverage and need to confirm which enrollment instructions apply to my retirement.” Add the retirement date or approval information you have, and label anything still pending. Ask which current document to follow if the dates in your materials appear different.

Resolve the district and TRS questions separately
Create two rows in your notes. For district benefits staff, ask for the confirmed last covered day under the current plan and how to obtain that confirmation. For TRS, ask for the enrollment deadline and the proposed coverage start date for your situation.
TRS says the coverage start depends on the submission timing and requested start. Write down the answer you receive rather than treating your last workday as the coverage change. If the two offices give answers that leave an unclear period, send each the specific date question that remains unresolved.

Save the enrollment response, not just the form
TRS directs eligible retirees to the Health tab in MyTRS to follow the enrollment prompts and submit. Use the official enrollment page to reach the portal and find the instructions for your situation.
Before starting, gather your current TRS correspondence and make a list of household members whose coverage you need to discuss. After submitting, save any receipt or confirmation available. Add a follow-up note for missing information, with the responsible office and the next action. An unfinished online session should remain marked as unfinished in your organizer.

Give the practice a clear appointment question
List the next mental health appointment beside the coverage dates you have confirmed. Send the practice the intended plan details through its usual intake or billing channel. Ask which information it needs to check the named clinician, service and appointment date.
If enrollment is still unresolved, say that directly and ask the office how it handles the scheduled visit while coverage is pending. Record its answer separately from the TRS enrollment response. For care questions during the transition, contact your treating clinician; an enrollment receipt cannot answer those questions.

Your next-step checklist
- Ask TRS to identify your enrollment event and deadline.
- Obtain the district coverage end date.
- Save the submitted enrollment record and outstanding requests.
- Confirm the TRS coverage start date.
- Bring unresolved appointment billing questions to the practice.
Keep personal, insurance and medical information in the appropriate organization’s approved secure channel.
Common questions
Can I calculate my deadline from the retirement date alone?
Ask TRS to confirm the deadline for your case and save that response. Its enrollment page describes different retirement circumstances; use the instructions attached to your own enrollment.

Does my district benefits office enroll me in TRS-Care?
Ask each office who owns the next action. TRS provides the retiree enrollment route through MyTRS; district coverage questions still need their own answer.
