Because the distractions went to bed before you did. All day, work and noise compete with anxious thoughts. At night your brain finally has free bandwidth, and spends it on worry. Add fatigue, which weakens your ability to wave thoughts away, plus the pressure of watching the clock, and everything gets louder after dark.
